Kynren - the spectacular tale of England that wowed more than 100,000 visitors last year returns to light up Bishop Auckland (just 11 miles from The Kingslodge Inn) once again this summer.
Produced by Eleven Arches, Kynren is a stunning open-air live action night show played out on a whopping eight acre stage with magnificent Auckland Castle as a backdrop.
Kynren takes its name from the Anglo-Saxon word for generation and will take the 8,000-strong audiences on an epic journey through 2,000 years of British history, myth and legend.
With an even bigger cast and crew including 1,500 local volunteers, performance horses, sheep, goats, cattle, geese and ducks as well as Norman longboats, steam trains, wagons and carriages, this open-air tribune is a must-see event that promises to be crammed with special effects bringing to life scenes with thrilling visual impact.

Exhibition of church needlework, Durham

An exhibition highlighting some of the best examples of church needlework from the past 1,100 years, including medieval silks from St Cuthbert’s tomb, the Charles 1 Cope and the Coronation Cope worn by the Bishop of Durham at the coronations of the last four British monarchs.

Durham City’s Traditional Christmas Festival returns from Friday 2nd to Sunday 4th December 2016.

Based around the Cathedral and Castle, as well as other city centre locations, it provides excellent Christmas shopping opportunities alongside festive entertainment.

Hubble Bubble Toil and Trouble Pumpkin Competition


This Halloween we challenge you to scare us with your spooky pumpkins! We're having a little competition at The Kingslodge Inn.

Bring in your pumpkin over the Halloween weekend (Friday 28 to Monday 31 October) and we’ll choose the best (most spook-tacular) as our winner on Tuesday 1 November.

Riverside Firework Display


Taking place in the Riverside Park, Chester-le-Street, Co. Durham on Sunday 6th November 2016, the inaugural Riverside Fireworks will climax with a 25-minute, superhero themed fireworks’ display, all choreographed to music!

Durham Book Festival 2016


 Durham Book Festival starts today, 7 October, with events taking place in and around the beautiful city of Durham.

In 2015, the festival engaged with over 17,000 people via 60 events held across various iconic venues the city including the Big Read Campaign which focused on Philip Pullman's Northern Lights.

Alongside traditional author events, Durham Book Festival commissions new writing and works with our local schools in a variety of ways.

The Kingslodge Inn is a fantastic place to grab a coffee, sit quietly and lose yourself in the written word and this year we are looking forward to Welcoming Inn our first book club as part of the celebrations.

‘The Beast’ is a 52-mile cycling event catering for highly experienced cycling enthusiasts which takes riders on a breathtaking ride across the county, taking in the sights of Iveston, Wolsingham and Tow Law along the way, before returning and eventually descending to Durham. The route is challenging as it takes in most of the hills in the north and west of the County, and has been given its name by test-riders themselves.

Participating or spectating let The Kingslodge Inn be your cycling partner with amazing bed and breakfast accommodation, where you can fuel up on quality homemade fayre before the race or reward yourself with a delicious meal (and even a dessert) afterwards!

Not for the faint-hearted, this formidable 52-mile round trip has become somewhat of a pilgrimage for biking experts. Conquering The Beast is something to be really proud of!

Open Treasure at Durham Cathedral

Be one of the first visitors to explore Open Treasure, Durham Cathedral’s world-class exhibition spaces opening this summer, and discover 2,000 years of history.

Open Treasure will open the doors to previously hidden spaces within the Cathedral Cloister, representing some of the most intact surviving medieval monastic buildings in England and home to the best-preserved monastic library in the British Isles.

The story of these remarkable buildings will be told, revealing their historical and architectural significance through the creation of a new exhibition route which will begin in the magnificent fourteenth-century Monks’ Dormitory and end in the Great Kitchen, one of only two surviving monastic kitchens in the UK.

Embark on this incredible journey and discover treasures from the Cathedral’s internationally renowned collection, including stunning medieval manuscripts, rare Anglo-Saxon artefacts and exquisite metalwork, all complemented by an exciting rolling exhibition programme.

Shoes – Pleasure and Pain at The Bowes Museum

Another major fashion coup for this summer, the Museum is the only UK venue outside London that will stage this exhibition before touring internationally to the USA and China.

Durham Big and Middle Rides are designed for young and old alike - the perfect way to see the Durham countryside and stay fit, riding along safe and closed roads.

Starting just up the hill from The Kingslodge Inn at County Hall, the Big Ride follows a scenic route up towards Sacriston, then up the lane to Broom House Farm and on towards Consett over the tops, before continuing the scenic route down the Lanchester Valley railway path back to Durham in a 25-mile round-trip.

Alternatively, for those who would prefer a slightly shorter route, the 10-mile Durham Middle Ride circuit is the perfect happy medium. Riders get to enjoy impressive views of the countryside above Sacriston (as per the Big Ride), before taking the long lane back down the hill at Witton Gilbert with Durham Cathedral in the distance, joining the railway path back towards Durham at Langley Park.
